Dear Third Grade Parents,

Happy Week 11 and last week of school! We made it! Thank you so much for the dedication and support you have all shown during distance learning. It would not have been possible without your help and hard work. We appreciate you all tremendously and we hope everyone can take a well-deserved break this summer.

A few people have asked for some resources to continue learning over the summer. Below is a list of ideas. I will continue to check my email throughout the summer, so if you have any questions please reach out.

Wishing you all a fun, restful, and healthy summer!

God Bless,

Mrs. Dumanovsky and Ms. Ciceley

Reminders and News

    • Super Hero Day! There will be a mask in your child’s Week 11 envelope. Please have them decorate it and wear it to our Zoom session.

Ideas for Summer Learning

  • Start a summer journal. Students can use prompts from the ‘Just For Fun’ summer packet of create their own.

  • Continue encouraging your child to use Freckle throughout the summer (especially the fact practice). They will be using this program in fourth grade also.
  • Read at least twenty minutes per day.
  • Sonoma County Library always has a great 'Summer Reading Club'. They haven't announced the 2020 program yet, but should soon. They also have a lot of amazing resources on their website for kids. If your child doesn't have a library card or forgets his PIN, they can register for an e-card.
  • Check out the science lessons on our classroom website. They are item #11 under 'Kids Corner'. I love ‘Mystery Science’ but it is a paid subscription that will only be available until June 30th. You can download the videos and print the corresponding activities before then though. ‘Mystery Doug’ is also great. It’s free and they email you a new video every week. You do have to register for it.
  • Have them do any lessons in their math workbook that were not done yet or supplemented with another lesson during distance learning. You will still have access to all the videos that correspond with each lesson on ThinkCentral. Log in info is on our class website.
  • They can also do Language Arts lessons in their Reader’s Notebook that were skipped over or supplemented during distance learning. All the stories should be available on ThinkCentral. Log in info is on our class website.

Dear Third Grade Parents,

It was so nice to see so many of you during our ‘St. Rose Cruise’ on Friday. We hope you enjoyed it as much as we did! We are very grateful to have such dedicated and wonderful families at St. Rose.

Happy Week 7 of Distant Learning and thank you for picking up your child’s packets today. I see that a lot more students have been starting to use Freckle! This is such a great program to help keep kids practicing important math and language arts skills. We are in the works of linking up their STAR reading and math scores to better align their learning levels.

We have two very important upcoming Masses that will delay two start times for our Zoom sessions. The May Crowning with Bishop Vasa will be this Thursday, May 7th at 10am. Please have your child watch the mass using this link: https://www.youtube.com/results?search_query=st+eugene%27s+cathedral+live+stream. Immediately after the Mass, please have your child log into Zoom for our third grade Thursday session. We will also be having a school mass on Thursday May 21st at 9:30am for The Feast of the Ascension. A link will be sent out soon for this mass and again, students will log into Zoom for our Thursday session immediately after Mass. I will send out a reminder email the day before both masses and links will also be posted to our classroom website.

Ms. Celeste has been kind enough to start an optional Fun Friday Zoom Sessions every Friday at 10am for the third graders! There is a list of upcoming projects and links on our class website (Item #12 in ‘Kids Corner’). Please check out the links for supplies needed for each project if you would like to join.

April 27, 2020

Dear Third Grade Parents,

We hope Week 6 is off to a great start! Thank you for your continued dedication and support during Distant Learning. I yearn to get back to our regular routines and miss seeing my family, friends and students everyday. I’m sure your children are feeling this way too. Please let them know that we are here for them and seeing their smiling faces on Zoom is the highlight of our week.

It is very hard to gauge how students are doing when they are not in the classroom with us. We depend on you for feedback if your child is overwhelmed with assignments or needs an extra challenge. We don’t want any students to be having a hard time and definitely don’t want to be adding any extra stress during this already stressful time. Please reach out to us if you need any support. We are always here to help.

Many students have started using Freckle and we’ve got some great feedback from parents! This is an optional online program but we do encourage your child to spend 10-15 minutes a day exploring this website. Students can choose what to work on and work at their own pace in the areas of Math and Language Arts. Helpful Tip: If our child is stuck on a math question, click on the video icon on the left side of the screen. This will give them a video walk though of a similar question being answered. Log in information for Freckle can be found on our class website.

God Bless,

Mrs. Dumanovsky and Ms. Ciceley

News and Reminders:

  • Next Spirit Day is Thursday, April 30th. It will be Pajama Day on Zoom.

Please feel free to email or call us if you have any questions or concerns. Don’t forget to check out our class website for additional resources.

To help keep spirits up, we will be starting Spirit Days! Participation is of course optional. We want this to be fun and not an added burden to your family. Below is a list of the scheduled days and themes and we will remind your child of the upcoming Spirit Day each week.

April 6, 2020

Dear Third Grade Parents,

We hope Week 4 is off to a good start. When we started planning for distant learning, we never imagined it would go on for this long. We were so hoping to have the children back in the classroom after Easter Vacation to pick up where you left off at home. The classroom is so quiet and lonely without the buzz of young minds at work.

As we are all trying to navigate through these uncertain times, we want to remind you that we are always here to help. Our top priority is to keep the students actively engaged and learning as they prepare for fourth grade. Every family’s situation is different; so if you feel the learning packets are overwhelming for your child, please let us know. If you need clarification, extra resources or just want to touch base, please don’t hesitate to call the school office and leave a message or email us anytime.

Here is some important information for Week 4:

Starting next week, we will be trying something a little different for math. In your child’s learning packets, the math assignments will be review pages for concepts already learned that are required to complete. Instead of using our regular Math curriculum, starting Week 5 we will be starting an online-based program called “Freckle” to better individualize instruction. Students can choose what to work on and work at their own pace. The first time students do each type of Freckle practice, they’ll take a pre-test. This short assessment will help get a baseline of each student and understand what kind of content they should begin with. After students have completed their pre-test, they are ready to practice and we can monitor their progress. To log in, visit http://student.freckle.com. Enter our Class Code DUMANN. Then enter your child’s first and last name. Although this is an optional program, our hope is that students will spend 10-20 minutes each day on Freckle. Attached to this email is a family letter about this resource.

Bishop Vasa will be live streaming a special Holy Week Mass from St. Eugene’s Cathedral for all students, parents, and teachers on Tuesday, April 7th at 10am. It is Bishop Vasa’s hope that, “it uplifts the spirits of our students, teachers and parents who have been impacted and separated during these weeks of quarantine and it brings their hearts closer in faith through the beauty of Holy Week”. Since this is scheduled on Tuesday at 10am, we will watch it together as a class during our regular Zoom session and have a discussion after. If you would like to also watch it, here is the link: https://www.youtube.com/channel/UC2ueqwT5jZngIWxq0ENTP4Q?fbclid=IwAR3-wggtcY4zBWvdB92KYYmzOAmIi7LRGwnOMuHgpgGElgin88ci9FxR2hE

Mrs. Flaherty has offered to send home a school library book during the next drop off/pick up on Monday, April 20th. If you would like her to pick out a book for your child to put in their next learning packet envelope, please let us know. Don’t forget, your child also has access to thousands of digital books through myON by Renaissance. Attached to this email is a family letter about this resource. You can also find the login information on our class website.

We will continue our weekly Zoom sessions every Tuesday and Thursday at 10am (except the week of April 13th for Easter break). Please remember this is a virtual classroom for third graders. We appreciate your support during these sessions but if you have any questions or comments for us, please send us an email. Here are some general guidelines that we would like you to review with your child.

  1. Classroom rules apply. What is inappropriate at school is also inappropriate during a Zoom meeting.
  2. Keep your microphone and camera on. The teacher will give directions for muting during the session.
  3. Do not change your background during the Zoom session.
  4. Zoom in a quiet, dedicated space free from distractions.
  5. Sign into the meeting with a first name and last initial so teachers can identify who is present.
  6. Late entry to a meeting is very distracting. Once everyone becomes more adept at signing on, the meetings will be closed five minutes after the start time.
  7. It is best if each child has an individual device to use during the meeting.

What’s on our website?!?!

We are adding new resources to our website every week!

  • myON Digital Library
  • Freckle Math Program Link and Directions
  • Brain Breaks Website Link
  • Think Central Link and Directions
  • Cursive Tutorial
  • Scholastic Learn at Home Activities
  • Let’s Be Creative! Virtual Arts Education Program through LBC
  • Mystery Science “Stormy Skies” Unit

Have a wonderful week and please give a big hug to your children for us! We miss them so much!

Sincerely,

Mrs. Dumanovsky and Miss. Cicely

March 27, 2020

Dear Third Grade Parents,

Happy Friday! We hope everyone is doing well as we finish up Week 2 of Distant Learning. This Monday (March 30th) will be another pick up/drop off day for 'learning packets' from 8am-5pm. Our class will have labeled boxes outside of the school for you to drop off Weeks 1 and 2 and pick up Weeks 3 and 4. Please keep in mind there are two envelopes for you to pick up, one for each week. We have also included a white board and dry erase marker in the envelopes to use during Zoom meetings.

If you are unable to pick up your child's next envelops, email us as soon as possible so we can work out something else. As always, don't hesitate to call or email us if you have any questions or concerns. Please give our love to your children. We miss them very much and can't wait to see their smiling faces again!

God Bless and Be Well,

Ms. Cicilie and Mrs. Dumanovsky

March 24, 2020

Dear Third Grade Parents,

Hope this email finds everyone well. As we start Week 2 of Distant Learning, we want to check in and send out a few reminders:

1) Please keep completed work in the weekly envelopes to turn in. Students do not need to rip out workbook pages. Just turn in the completed learning packet.

2) Our next drop off/pick up date is Monday, March 30th. There will be boxes in front of the school labeled for third grade. Please drop off Week 1 and Week 2 envelopes of completed work and pick up Week 3.

3) Third grade math can be tough! Please, please, please have your child watch the "Interactive Student Edition" video for each lesson before completing the workbook pages. These videos are considered the
'teaching' aspect of the lesson before they move on to trying it on their own in their workbooks and learning packet. These videos can be found by signing into your ThinkCentral account (https://www-k6.thinkcentral.com/ePC/start.do). After you sign in, click "My Library", then "Mathematics", and then "Interactive Student Edition". The "Go Math! CA Reteach Book" and "Math on the Spot Videos" are also a great resource for students that are finding a particular lesson difficult.

4) Continue to practice multiplication facts are read for at least 20 minutes each day. We have added 2 great resources to our class website to help keep up with this daily task. You can find them under "Kids
Corner". We have also attached a PDF to this email with our Reading Log and a couple of reading response sheets. These are not mandatory to turn in but may help with encouraging consistent learning and reinforcing comprehension at home.

Reminder: Our weekly Zoom sessions are Tuesday and Thursdays at 10:00am.

Please reach out to one or both of us if you have any questions or concerns. Thank you for all your hard work during this time. We know how difficult this can be for everyone and we don't expect mistake free
work. Please know that new concepts being introduced, especially in math, will be revisited when we return to the classroom. All we ask of your child is that they try their best.

Sincerely,

Ms. Claye and Mrs. Dumanovsky
